Community participation has always been a passion for the Welkom Team, and 2011 was no exception. A notable highlight is the Welkom Team’s recent choice to adopt the Adamsonvlei Primary School, located in the outskirts of Welkom. The school comprises of children who come from the surrounding farms in the area. The Department of Basic Education, has also played a crucial role in that of providing transport to the school.
Unfortunately, the farming in this area has come to an abrupt halt. Therefore, one finds vast social challenges such as unemployment prevailing. However, despite their struggles, the community has continued to persevere through the help of Ubank’s Welkom Team. Ubank Welkom’s Social Committee took the initiative and contributed the following to make a difference:
1. Bought the learners shoes, tracksuits, socks, beanies,
sanitary towels and school bags.
2. Made arrangements to get bread supplied to the school
on daily basis.
3. Fixed broken window panes and doors.
4. Started a clothing bank for the learners benefit
5. Organised a gas stove, bottle and refill
for cooking purposes.
6. Gave the learners together with educators an unforgettable
year-end function that will truly be cherished.
In addition to the above, a bus trip was organised and saw the learners being whisked in style from the farms to a 3-Star Bundu Game Lodge. They were hosted for the day and received all the meal perks that came with the trip. The festivities included a jumping castle and the never seen before, Father Christmas, who had gifts galore for them. To our amazement, the Lodge saw the importance of what we were doing and added some drinks and unplanned food, on the house.

Ubank`s almost 900 employees are all actively engaged in the Khula Nathi Schools Programme. This initiative allows our colleagues to contribute their time, skills and knowledge to raising funds and contributing to improved learning and teaching environments in four schools - one in each of our regions.
The initial phase of the programme is focused on fund raising activities, these have ranged from selling food to organising charity golf days all focused on obtaining the necessary funds to meet the wish-lists of the schools.
The subsequent phases of the programmes include visiting the schools to implement the assistance they have asked for. This phase allows our colleagues - together with members of the community - to become physically involved in the upgrading of the schools.
Upgrading ranges from providing toilet facilities and classrooms, to fitting out science laboratories and libraries to painting, fixing roofs, flooring, windows and doors.
